There is strong support for the government’s measures to protect families

According to the latest research by the Mária Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS), Hungarians acknowledge the government’s active role in protecting families and addressing the economic hardships caused by the war. The survey found that there is broad public support for measures such as reducing utility costs, capping January energy bills, capping the food price margin, and capping fuel prices. These measures serve to ensure the security of Hungarian families, even in times of hardship.

During the crises of recent years, the government has taken several steps to provide direct assistance to families and alleviate their burdens. These include the food price margin cap introduced in March 2025, which limits the retail markup on essential products; the utility price cap introduced in January, which provides a 30% discount on energy costs that have risen due to cold weather; and the recently introduced protected fuel price, which caps the price of petrol at HUF 595 per litre and diesel at HUF 615 per litre to ensure supply security.

According to the KINCS survey, the majority of Hungarians support the state’s active role in addressing economic difficulties. 90% of respondents believe that the government must protect people from the economic impacts of the war, the energy crisis and rising prices, and ensure stable and secure conditions for families.

To this end, 83% of respondents consider government intervention in economic processes to be justified. Support for such measures is particularly high among parents of young children (98%) and pro-government voters (93%), but three-quarters of opposition voters also agree on the necessity of state intervention.

The survey also found that supporting families is a top priority for Hungarians: 94% of respondents believe the government should support families, and 90% believe it should provide them with stable and predictable conditions.

The survey results show that the majority of Hungarians support policies that protect families, even in times of crisis and ensure their stability and security.
