One of the most important conditions for having a child is a self-owned home

The significance of the housing program is decisive for having children, as according to the Hungarians, a self-owned home and adequate housing conditions are necessary conditions for starting a family and expanding the family, as shown by the research of the Mária Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS).

According to young people under the age of 25 in Hungary, the three most important factors in terms of having children are physical and mental health, a secure job and adequate housing conditions. Based on a research by KINCS in 2019, a self-owned home is especially important for today’s generation to start a family. Respondents rated the importance of adequate housing for childbearing to 4.6 on a five-point scale.

In a previous study, four-fifths of Hungarians of childbearing age stated that they needed a self-owned home to have children and raise them. 30 percent say proper housing is very important and 50 percent say it is important.

The family housing subsidy (CSOK) and its expansion, or even the release of mortgage linked to the birth of children are both elements of the Family Protection Action Plan launched last year that enjoy widespread social support. According to this year's surveys, CSOK was the second most popular measure to help families within the Action Plan, with 89 per cent of respondents agreeing with it and a large majority, more than four-fifths, finding it useful.

In the last ten years, Hungarian families have been helped by housing, with the phase out of foreign currency loans in order to keep their homes, followed by the reduction of overheads and, from 2015, the ever-since expanding housing program, which will be, among others, complemented by the home renewal program.

Housing opportunities for families contribute to the fact that more children can be born in Hungarian homes where it is good to raise a child.
